WARDENSVILLE, W.Va. - The search continued Monday for a 26-year-old Virginia man who reportedly drowned Sunday in Warden Lake in Hardy County.

Keenan James McGowan of Fredericksburg was swimming with a friend and was struggling to stay afloat and screaming before he disappeared into the water, West Virginia State Police said.

The incident occurred Sunday at about 4 p.m. in the lake off Moore's Run Road while McGowan was swimming with Casey Kearns, 29, also of Fredericksburg. The two men were attempting to swim from one side of the lake to the other.

The drowning was confirmed by "an unaffiliated witness at the scene," police said.

Kearns was unable to locate McGowan when he got out of the lake.

Rescue and recovery efforts - including diving and a perimeter search - continued Monday beginning at 8 a.m. by West Virginia State Police, West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter, Frederick County Sheriff's Department and fire companies from Wardensville, Moorefield, Capon Valley, Mathias, Springfield and Patterson Creek.
