Cumberland Region 1044 AYSO sign-ups begin Saturday

CUMBERLAND — AYSO Region 1044 (Cumberland) will hold the first of three soccer registrations for the fall season on Saturday, May 27, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Mason Sports Complex Field, Offutt Street.

The registration for U5 will be $35 and all others will be $45.

Stanley-Czapski capture the BW mixed doubles tennis tournament

CUMBERLAND — Bishop Walsh hosted a mixed doubles tennis tournament Wednesday at the Mason Sports Complex with over 30 players participating in the double-elimination tournament.

Winning the last match in a tiebreaker, Jordan Stanley and Ann Czapski defeated Johnny Groetzinger and Molly Donahue. Finishing third was Frank Siemann and Kelly Walbert, ahead of Jimmy Benjamin and Leah Scarpelli. Joe Frye and Veronica Snodgrass edged Dylan Owens and Lauren Knippenberg for fifth place.

Other winners include Peirce Stern and Blair Welch, T.C. Hager and Abbey Larkin, Cameron Sell and Mary Ellen McGoye, Eric Tola and Sara Pompilio, Sean Hastings and Annie Malone, and Mike Siemann and Meghan Powers.

18 holes at Maplehurst costs $26

FROSTBURG — The price for a round of golf at Maplehurst Country Club was incorrectly reported in the May 22 edition of the Cumberland Times-News Sports Magazine. A round of golf at Maplehurst costs $26, plus tax, and includes 18 holes and a cart.

Bus trip to Bucs/Braves game set

CUMBERLAND — A bus trip is planned for the Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Aug. 2, at 7:05.

Cresaptown Eagles sign-up Saturday

CRESAPTOWN — The Cresaptown Eagles Pee Wee football team will be holding sign-ups on Saturday, from 9 to 11 a.m., at Webber Pavilion.

The sign-up is for both football players and cheerleaders who will be at least 6 years old, but not older than 11 by Sept. 1. Any returning player or cheerleader who has not turned in his uniform yet must do so before registering.

Kelly-Baier win Pines scramble

KEYSER — Paul Kelly and Paul Baier won the MGA two-man scramble at Polish Pines Golf Course by shooting a 34.

Ed Mickey and Ken Griffith were second with a 35. Kelly was closest with his second shot on No. 3, while Wayne Longenecker was closest on No. 4.

Summer Swim League Block Party to be held June 16

CUMBERLAND — The Riverside YMCA Summer Swim League will hold a season opening Summer Swimming block party Friday, June 16, 5 to 7 p.m., at the Cumberland Riverside YMCA.

The event will give area teams competing in the Summer Swim League to meet the competition, practice starts and turns, and buy summer swim gear from Action Accents such as swimsuits, goggles, swim caps, T-shirts, accessories and drag suits. Cash and checks only will be accepted. Pizza and soda will be served afterward at a cost of $3 per swimmer.

Times-News to publish LL/Softball section June 28

CUMBERLAND — Team photographs of little league baseball teams and youth softball teams should be submitted to the Times-News so they can appear in the annual Little League/Softball Section which will be published on Wednesday, June 28. Photos received after Monday, June 19 will not appear in the section.

The Little League/Softball Section is designed to recognize each and every team in the area from all of the various leagues. Therefore, no other little league or youth softball team photos will appear in the Times-News after the June 28 section is published, including championship teams from the various leagues or tournaments.

The name of the team and the name of the league the particular team plays in must be clearly identified with e-mailed photos or on the back of hard-copy photos.

Photos can be e-mailed to; mailed to Times-News sports editor Mike Burke, Cumberland Times-News, P.O. Box 1662, Cumberland, Md., 21501-1662; or brought in to the Times-News editorial department, using the door on the S. Mechanic Street side of the building.

All photographs should be earmarked “Little League Section.”

The Times-News will not mail hard-copy photographs back to contributors but will keep the photos for one month after the section is published so they can be picked up.

Shaffer team wins Ladies’ event at Sisters

RAWLINGS — The team of Jan Shaffer, Laurette Michaels, Deb Grove and Marie Summerfield took first place in the Wednesday evening Ladies League at Fore Sisters Golf Course.

The second-place team was JoAnn Davis, Rita Amtower, Jean True and Bernie Corley. In third place was the team of Bev Warnick, Deb Mohler, Deb Bloss and Fran Whiteman.
