FREDERICK — Trenton Eirich doubled to lead off the seventh inning and scored the winning run on a throwing error, lifting Allegany to a 2-1 win over Clear Spring for the Class 1A West Region baseball championship Friday evening at McCurdy Field.
The victory sends Allegany (20-3) to the state tournament on Tuesday at McCurdy, where the Campers will take on North Region champion Bohemia Manor in the second of two state semifinals. The Allegany-Bo Manor game will begin at 7 p.m. The other semifinal, between Cambridge-South Dorchester and Dunbar, starts at 4 o’clock.
Tied 1-1, Eirich ripped a pitch down the left field line for a double to begin the Allegany seventh. Ryan Murphy then drilled a pitch off of pitcher Jared Brant’s foot. Brant threw the ball by the Clear Spring first baseman, allowing Eirich to cross the plate.
Bryce Nightengale hurled seven innings of three-hit ball, allowing one run, striking out five and walking none for the win.
Colton Sivic doubled and scored on an RBI single by Nightengale in the fourth for Allegany’s other run.
Dillon Stouffer drove in Clear Spring’s run with a single.
East Hardy 8
BAKER, W.Va. — Brady Hinkle and Korey Foltz went 3 for 4 and East Hardy, down a run in the bottom of the seventh rallied for three runs and a walkoff win over Moorefield for the Class A, Region I, Section 4 championship Thursday night at East Hardy.
Shawn Skovron, Hinkle, Cole Collier and Wyatt Basye singled in consecutive at-bats to start the bottom of the seventh for the Cougars, who walked off a winner after a throwing error on a ground ball hit by Michael Miller.
Basye finished with a pair of his for East Hardy (22-10).
Lance Taylor launched a grand slam for Moorefield (19-10) in the top of the fifth. Jared Kite had a 3 for 3 night and Garrett Keller added two singles.
East Hardy will play at Pendleton County in a Region II semifinal on Tuesday at 6:30.
Hope for Hyndman 7
WINDBER, Pa. — Windber pounded out 16 hits, with winning pitcher Steve Moxhim, Tyler Cobrucky and Greg Walker getting three each, to hand Hyndman a loss in its regular-season finale.
The Hornets (11-8) led 6-0 after a five-run second inning was outscored by Windber 9-1 the rest of the way.
Brad Torbet and Chad Deneen doubled and singled and Dan Wisnewski doubled for Hyndman. Torbet had three RBIs and Wisnewski two.
Hyndman will play a Class A, District V playoff game on Wednesday. The site and opponent have yet to be determined.
