BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Frostburg State broke the school record for best start to a season by beating Bridgewater in its morning match, then fell from the unbeaten ranks by losing a five-setter to Washington & Lee in the afternoon in the Bridgewater College Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.

With a 25-15, 25-12, 23-25, 25-6 win over Bridgewater, the Bobcats set a school record by opening the season 13-0.

Sabrina Winterling led the way with 14 kills and six blocks while Sarah Stephens had 13 kills, 14 digs and two blocks for the Bobcats. Kylie Carrington handed out 39 assists and had six digs.

Jamie Thomas and Amber Winterling were cited for outstanding all-around efforts. Thomas finished with 11 kills, 15 digs, four blocks and six aces while Winterling had seven kills, eight digs, four blocks and three aces. Brittany McVearry had 14 digs.

In the second match, FSU took a 2-0 lead, but Washington & Lee rebounded with three straight wins to claim the match 3-2. The Bobcats won 25-21 and 25-22. W&L won the next three 25-20, 25-18 and 15-7.

Stephens led the Bobcats with 13 kills and 13 digs while Sabrina Winterling had nine kills and two blocks. Thomas had eight kills, 14 digs, two blocks and Amber Winterling recorded six kills, 11 digs, two blocks and three aces. Carrington finished 33 assists, four kills and three aces.

Stephens and Sabrina Winterling were named to the all-tournament team. It was the third such honor this year for Stephens, who had also been named to the Haverford and FSU all-tournament teams.

Frostburg plays at Geneva on Wednesday.


Potomac splits pair

KEYSER, W.Va. — Shayna Sweitzer had a big day, finishing with 19 kills, 18 assists, 16 service points and 12 digs in leading Potomac State to a split in a tri-match.

Potomac State lost to Butler 25-27, 25-18, 15-25 and 18-25, then beat Essex 25-14, 25-14.

In the four-game match with Butler, Sweitzer had 14 kills, 12 digs, 11 points and eight assists. Madison Hollington added 12 points, 11 digs and 32 assists, Sirena Flesher had nine kills, seven points and 14 digs, and Amanda Aleyene 16 digs. Alieshia Porter had nine kills and Bri Teets seven kills.

In the sweep of Essex, Flesher had a team-high 11 service points, while Sweitzer had five kills and 10 assists. Tiffany Shank chipped in with six kills, Hollington had 11 assists and Aleyene seven digs.

Butler went 2-0 on the day, also beating Essex 25-14, 25-14.

The Catamounts (10-3) host Beaver County on Wednesday.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Sarah Stephens and Sabrina Winterling combined for 22 kills as Frostburg State swept Philadelphia Biblical, 25-8, 25-13 and 25-13.

Stephens led the attack with 12 kills, four aces and three digs, while Winterling added 10 kills and a block for the Bobcats.

Jamie Thomas chipped in with eight kills, eight digs and an ace, Amber Winterling had five kills, three digs and two aces, and setter Kylie Carrington 29 assists.
