BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Matt Maiers fired a five-hitter and also homered as Hampshire thumped Buckhannon-Upshur 8-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Shane Ennis and Bucky Timbrook also homered for Hampshire (9-1), which led 5-1 after only two innings.
Maiers went the distance, allowed only five hits and one earned run, walked two and struck out 10.
Ennis and Timbrook homered and singled, with Ennis’ homer a two-run shot in the first inning and Timbrook’s a solo blast in the second. Maiers hit a solo homer in the seventh.
David Delawder had two singles and two RBIs and Garrett Crawford singled twice for the Trojans.
Zane Clevenger doubled and knocked in both runs for Buckhannon-Upshur (6-5).
Hampshire plays at Allegany on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Elkins 2, Petersburg 0
ELKINS, W.Va. — Corey Gainer thew a four-hit shutout and won a pitchers duel against Petersburg’s Alex See in a well-played, fast-paced game.
Gainer, who struck out five, also doubled and knocked in a run for Elkins (5-7). Clayton Collett doubled and scored a run.
Ryan Colaw went 2 for 2 with two singles for Petersburg (10-3), which will host Washington on Tuesday. See got the loss despite allowing only two hits. He struck out four.
Petersburg 16, Preston 4
ELKINS, W.Va. — Justin Smith went 4 for 4 and Alex See hit a two-run homer as Petersburg pounded out 15 hits in a five-inning win over Preston.
Smith hit a double and three singles, See homered and singled and Brian George had a double and three RBIs for the Vikings.
Trevor Harman went the distance for the win.
Kyle Cool, Shane Wiles and Kurtis Potka all went 3 for 3 for Preston.
New Life 5-4, Calvary 4-24
POTOMAC PARK — Held to one hit in the first game, Calvary Christian pounded out 24 in the second to earn a split of a doubleheader with New Life Christian.
The Eagles (5-2, 4-1 Mason-Dixon Conference) scored in every inning in the second game.
Winning pitcher Levi Hartsock had six hits — a triple, double and four singles — and scored four times to lead the attack.
Nick Davis hit three doubles and a single and scored six runs, Justin Swogger had a double, two singles and scored rive runs, Mark Capper smacked three singles and a double and Patrick Ware had two singles and a double.
In the opener, New Life’s Buddy McCrory threw a one-hitter for the win.
Hartsock had an RBI single for Calvary, which plays again on Monday at Cumberland Valley.
Northern JV 5, Frankfort JV 3
ACCIDENT — Noah Werner and Hunter Mallow hit RBI singles to back the four-hit pitching of Damian Monroe to lead Northern over Frankfort in junior varsity action on Saturday.
Werner’s single plated two runs and Mallow’s one for the Huskies (5-1-1). Meshach Metz hit two singles. Monroe went the distance and struck out three for the win.
Gavin Mauzy doubled and singled and Noah Bible singled and scored all three Frankfort runs.
Northern hosts Petersburg in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
