Smithsburg holds off Allegany

CUMBERLAND — Cameron Kutchey scored 22 points and John Palmer added 15 as Smithsburg downed Allegany, 58-55, in the high school boys basketball season opener for both teams Tuesday at Campobello.

Kutchey led all scorers by hitting eight field goals, with two being 3-pointers, and 4 of 6 free throws for the Leopards. Palmer made five field goals and 5 of 6 free throws.

A close game throughout, Smithsburg led 32-30 at halftime and 48-45 heading into the final eight minutes.

Trey Magee scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds, both team highs, for Allegany. Cameron Bratton had 16 points and a team-leading six assists. Jordan Fazzalore added eight points and Cameron O’Neal seven.

Allegany won the jayvee game 36-32. Grant Cain had 17 points and Landon Watkins nine for the Campers. Jordan Ingram had 10 for the Leopards.

Allegany plays at Westmont Hilltop in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on Monday.

Southern 72Moorefield 37

OAKLAND — Southern ran 15 players on to the court and all 15 contributed as the Rams opened the season in crisp form, rolling Moorefield Tuesday night at Southern.

Ryan Hebb led Southern with 15 points, while Korey Mitchum scored 14. The Rams led 22-8 after the first quarter, 34-12 at the half and 58-22 after three.

Moorefield was led by Garrett Haggerty, who scored a game-high 23 points.

Southern won the junior varsity game, 65-27, as Corey Ashby scored 17 points and Bryson Wilt 15 with 10 rebounds. Addison Barb had six for Moorefield.

Southern (1-0) will host Tucker County on Friday.

Bishop Walsh 66Northern 58

CUMBERLAND — Arnold Janeczek scored 29 points and Tayden Jessie scored 16 to lead Bishop Walsh to its first victory of the season as well as its first victory under first-year head coach Doc Edwards.

Janeczek hit 11 field goals, two of them three-pointers, as the Spartans hit nine for the game. Jessie had the heavy hand there, knocking down four three-pointers to finish with 16. Michael Spartara scored 10 points and hit a pair of three-pointers as well.

Northern was led by a red-hot Dillan Orendorf with 25 points. Orendorf hit seven of the Huskies’ nine three-pointers and was 5 for 6 from the free-throw line. Xavier Pryor scored 13 points for Northern.

The Spartans (1-2) will play Friday at Mountain Ridge. Northern (0-1) will host Frankfort on Friday.
