FROSTBURG — D.J. Woodmore led four scores in double figures with 24 points and also had 10 rebounds to help power No. 25 Virginia Wesleyan to an 88-74 victory over Frostburg State in college men’s basketball Saturday afternoon.
The unbeaten Marlins (3-0) used an 18-5 run late in the second half to take control, moving a 48-44 lead to a 66-49 cushion with 5:26 to go.
Jabari Kamau led the Bobcats (0-4) in scoring, with 19 points, and rebounds, with seven. Aaron Bellamy added 16 points and Nick Smoot 11.
The first half was back and forth, with Virginia Wesleyan taking a 36-31 lead at halftime. Frostburg State quickly closed the gap to two, 38-36, early in the second half on a layup by Kamau, and another layup a few minutes later kept it a four-point game, 48-44. That was as close as FSU would get, as the Marlins went on their 18-5 run at that point.
Virginia Wesleyan outrebounded Frostburg 50-35, which led to a 25-10 advantage in second-chance points. The Marlins also held a 41-19 edge in points off the bench.
Frostburg State will host Shenandoah on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
