Potomac State wins home opener, 72-51

KEYSER, W.Va. — Rachel Waiboga had 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead Potomac State over Southern Maryland 72-51 in its home opener Tuesday night.

Potomac State was plagued by turnovers in the first half, keeping Southern Maryland within striking distance, down 32-25 at the break.

In the second half, the Catamounts took care of the ball and went on a run sparked by three pointers from Alexis Steele, Lindsay Miller and Jenna McAtee to pull away for the 19-point win.

McAtee finished with 15 points and Miller had 13. Steele scored 11 points with six assists and five steals. Morgan Wright grabbed eight rebounds to go with eight points.

Southern Maryland drops to 0-2. Potomac State is 1-1 and plays tonight at Garrett at 6 p.m.

CUMBERLAND  — Dejhonae Cannady scored 26 points and Tyonna Lawson added 20 as defending Maryland JUCO champion Chesapeake beat Allegany College of Maryland Thursday in the Trojans’ home opener.

The Skipjacks played their way to a 45-22 lead at halftime behind the scoring performance by Cannady and Teamer, and the defense prevented the Trojans from rallying in the second half to drop Allegany to 0-2.

Brittany Taylor added 10 points, and Sydney Small had nine for Chesapeake.

Allegany was led in scoring by Maddie Nightengale’s 18 points. The sophomore from Mountain Ridge made five field goals, including one three, and went 7 for 10 from the foul line, while Dirica Souder had eight points.

Monique Rhodes had a Trojan-high 10 rebounds to go with five points, and Christina Briscoe finished with five points and five assists.

“Chesapeake is a very good team,” said Allegany head coach Bethany Sindy. “It’s a good challenge to play such an athletic team this early in the year. It gives us something to work on as a team and prepare for the rest of the season.”

The Trojans (0-1 MDJUCO) will play in the Frederick Mixer beginning Saturday with a game against Delaware Tech at 5 p.m.
