Garrett bounces back after loss, beats Butler in Hoop Fest

OAKLAND — Garrett followed a disappointing 84-78 loss in the opener at their new gym to Northern Virginia with a 69-65 win over Butler on  Saturday in the Railey Realty Hoop Fest.

The weather induced seven day lay-off for Garrett took its toll as they struggled to make open shots in the first half against Northern Virginia. Though they were able to hang around, trailing just 35-30 at the break.

The Lakers kept it close in the second as well, even taking a two-point lead. However, they missed nine free throws in the second half alone, shooting just 23-36 from the line for the game.

Antonio Butler led with 19 points and four assists. Guila Panzo grabbed 12 rebounds to go with 11 points.

Brandon Winbush poured in 33 and Khalil Jabble added 20 for Northern Virginia.

Garrett bounced back against Butler despite the continued shooting woes. Defensively, The Lakers held Butler without a three pointer in the first half as they led 18-12 going into the locker room.

Garrett also dominated the boards, 45-20, led again by Panzo with 18.

Panzo also led in scoring with 17. Din Moore dropped 11 and Butler scored 10.
