Armstrong places sixth in Azalea
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Local golfer Slug Armstrong finished sixth in the Senior Azalea Invitational, held recently at the Country Club of Charleston.
Armstrong, of Frostburg, had rounds of 71, 75 and 70 for a 3-over par 216. The Senior Division was won Brady Exber of Las Vegas who had a 3-under par 210 and beat John Dennis, of Greenville, S.C., in a playoff. Forty-two golfers made the cut of 153 or better after two rounds.
The Super Senior Division was won by Bob Currey of Boston with an even par 213.
Armstrong was the only area golfer competing in the event. In the last Golfweek Magazine rankings, John Blank of Frostburg was ranked No. 7 among the Super Seniors and Armstrong was No. 9 in the Senior Division.
Armstrong plans on playing in the Maryland Senior Open Oct. 15-16 in Lutherville and the Society of Seniors Championship Oct. 23-25 in Fort Myers, Fla.
Frostburg State women fall at St. Mary’s
ST. MARY’S CITY — St. Mary’s scored two goals in each half to defeat Frostburg State, 4-1, in women’s field hockey on Saturday.
Claire Kortyna, Gabby Collins, Rachel Natoli and Olivia Edwards scored for St. Mary’s (6-4, 1-2 CAC). Amanda Lennon scored her first goal of the season, off a penalty corner taken by Ashley Johnson, for Frostburg State (5-10, 0-3).
Maggie Edwards made 11 saves in goal for Frostburg, which will host Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
On Thursday, Johnson, Rachel Merritt and Alli Elliott scored second-half goals but Randolph-Macon (4-7) held on for a 4-3 win over the Bobcats. The Yellow Jackets led 3-0 after the first 20 minutes. Edwards made six saves in goal.
Russell repeats as player of week
CENTERVILLE, Mass. — Frostburg State senior midfielder Ryan Russell was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Region Offensive Player of the Week.
Russell was named the Capital Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week earlier this week. This is the second straight week the midfielder collected both weekly awards.
During a 2-0 week for the Bobcats, Russell netted three more goals and added an assist, including the game-winning goal and an assist late in the contest in FSU’s 2-0 league win over Wesley. He scored twice in a 4-1 victory over Hood earlier in the week.
Frankfort boosters meet Tuesday
SHORT GAP, W.Va. — The Frankfort Athletic Booster Club will meet Tuesday, Oct. 9, 7 p.m., in the Frankfort High School library. Parents and coaches are encouraged to attend.
