ACM’s Rievel leads nation in scoring

Garrett’s Vaughn, Skaro also among major statistical leaders at the break

— CUMBERLAND — Allegany College of Maryland sophomore guard Gina Rievel enters the Trojans’ winter break as the nation’s leading scorer in Division II of the NJCAA.

Rievel, a graduate of Westmont Hilltop High School in Johnstown, Pa., is averaging 25.4 points over eight games to put herself a half-point ahead of Taylor Mantya of Delta College (Mich.). Helping her reach the top of the country is the fact that she is also the leader in three-points per game, averaging 3.9. her 8.5 field goals a game average ranks fifth in all of Division II.

Through the first eight games, Rievel is shooting 39.1 percent from the floor and 37.3 from three-point range. She also averages 4.5 points a game from the foul line as a 65.5 percent free throw shooter.

The Garrett Lakers also place a pair of players amongst the Division III leaders in the major statistical categories.

Ayana Vaughn ranks as the 15th-leading scorer by averaging 19.8 points over 11 games. The freshman guard from Beaver Falls (Pa.) High School is shooting 40.6 percent from the floor and 75.8 percent from the foul line in helping the Lakers to a 7-4 record.

Anamaria Skaro sits 30th among the nation’s rebounding leaders by averaging 10.5 boards a game. She climbs as high as 18th when total rebounds are counted as the Croatian-born forward has 115 in Garrett’s 11 games.

The Lakers are also on break and are off until a Jan. 5 meeting with Prince George’s in McHenry. Allegany (3-6) returns on Jan. 4 when it travels to play Baltimore City.
