Frostburg State women splash way to weekend wins

FROSTBURG — The Frostburg State women’s swim team celebrated Senior Day by defeating Davis & Elkins, 113-75, on Saturday for their third win in two days.

The Bobcats had beaten Pitt-Bradford 125-61 and Franciscan 105-80 on Friday night.

Ironically, the Senior Day win came from a Bobcats team that has no seniors, but plenty of juniors.

Junior Kaitlyn Donch won the 200-meter individual medley (2:45.69), the 400 freestyle (5:06.65) and the 100 breaststroke (1:23.18). Maci Quintanilla won the 200 freestyle (2:30.95) and the 100 backstroke (1:23.92) for the Bobcats.

Friday evening, Frostburg earned six first-place finishes, with Donch getting three more wins in the 1,000-yard freestyle (5:48.35), the 500 freestyle (1:17.13) and 50 freestyle, tying with teammate junior Meredith Johnson (28.20). Junior Jaclyn Franzak took the 100 butterfly (1:06.05), and junior Elizabeth Jarrell won the 50 freestyle (28.20).

Over the course of 11 events, the Lady Bobcats piled up 19 top-three finishes, which included team sweeps with junior junior Sara King following Donch in the 500 freestyle for second place (6:17.09) and the 100 freestyle with Johnson (1:03.13) beating Jarrell to the wall.

Men split meets

The FSU men beat Pitt-Bradford 103-87 on Friday, then lost to Davis & Elkins 155-48 on Saturday afternoon.

On Friday, Jon Shepard, Vince Faiella and Drake Dobish finished 1-2-3 in the 200-yard freestyle, with Shepard winning by seven seconds in 2:01.66. Shepherd later won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.48).

Jesse Gregory won the 50 freestyle (24.27) and 100 butterfly (1:01.69). Aleksandar Combs was second in the 100 butterfly (1:03.11). Gregory also won the 100 freestyle (55.59) and Faiella was runner-up (57.52).

Saturday’s Senior Day meet against D&E was the final one at home for Gregory, Faiella and Drake Dobish.

Of the 10 events, FSU had 10 top-three finishes. Shepard finished second in the 100-meter breastroke (1:11.27 and 100 freestyle (1:00.25) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:27.46). Gregory was second in the 100 freestyle (1:00.25) and third in the 50 freestyle (26.75), and Jacob Aylward was second in the 800 (10:23.56) to lead the way.
