Rockville ends PSC’s season, 1-0

ARNOLD — Potomac State suffered some tough breaks in the second half, missing out on two possible goals that would have changed the outcome of its 1-0 loss to Montgomery-Rockville in the Region XX championship at Anne Arundel.

The loss ends Potomac State’s season at 15-3 with two of those losses coming to Rockville over the last week. The Catamounts entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and beat fourth-seeded Anne Arundel to advance to the finals. No. 3 Rockville beat No. 2 Howard in their semifinal match. The Knights handed PSC a 3-1 loss during the final regular-season game.

The first half went all 45 minutes without a goal, but the Raptors needed six minutes to score in the second half. Mohammed Oulare kicked an unassisted goal to give his team a 1-0 lead that stuck until the end.

“After losing to them last Saturday, we went into this game with a defensive mind-set and hoped to get some breakaways.

“It worked well at getting us some chances, setting us up with a penalty kick, but we missed that and it hurt us.”

Rockville was slightly busier than the Cats, attempting eight shots to PSC’s five. The Raptors led 4-2 in corner kicks and got four saves from Serigne Baba-Gaye in the shutout. Conor Fungaroli had seven saves.

Potomac State missed a goal when Baba-Gaye came up with a big save, and another when a shot bounded off the goal post.

“I thought we dominated the last 10 minutes, but my hat’s off to them. They played a great game and made the play they needed to.”

Three Cats were named to the Region XX All-Tournament team. Northern graduate Steven Holtschneider was honored as was Mountain Ridge grad Justin Winebrenner. Fungaroli, from Chestnut Ridge High School, also earned an All-Tourney nod.

Rockville (16-3-2) plays in the NJCAA Division III Tournament in Herkimer, N.Y., beginning Nov. 8.
