CUMBERLAND — The deadline for coaches to nominate players for the All-Area boys and girls basketball teams is Sunday, March 31.
Head coaches are requested to nominate players from their teams and provide season statistics for each nominee.
Boys basketball nominations should be emailed to email@example.com. Girls basketball nominations should be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Nominations may also be faxed to 301-722-5270 or can be made by calling the sports department at 301-722-4600 between 6 and 9 p.m.
Ellerslie baseball sign-ups Sunday
ELLERSLIE — The Ellerslie Athletic Association will hold baseball sign-ups on Sunday, from 4 to 5 p.m., at the Ellerslie Fire Hall.

Geno Smith works out with Bills
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills’ offseason search for a quarterback led them to West Virginia on Friday, where they conducted a private workout involving Geno Smith.
A person familiar with what happened told The Associated Press that Smith’s workout took place on campus in the morning. The person added the former Mountaineer had dinner the previous night with general manager Buddy Nix, assistant GM Doug Whaley, coach Doug Marrone and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.
Smith is regarded as one of the top quarterback prospects available in the NFL draft next month.
The Bills open the draft with the eighth pick, and Nix has already expressed an interest in selecting a quarterback, though he won’t be pinned down to what round.
Buffalo’s need at quarterback grew larger last week after the team released returning starter Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has since signed with the Tennessee Titans. That leaves Tarvaris Jackson as the only experienced quarterback currently on the Bills roster.
Last season, Smith threw for 4,205 yards and led the nation with 42 touchdown passes. This is the second time in a little over a week that Bills officials have watched Smith work out. Several team officials attended West Virginia’s pro day on March 14. Smith also participated in the NFL combine at Indianapolis last month.
Marrone is already very familiar with Smith. Hired by the Bills in January after four seasons at Syracuse, Marrone went 3-0 against Smith and the Mountaineers. That included a 38-14 win in the Pinstripe Bowl in December.
Smith struggled on a snowy day, going 16 for 26 for 197 yards and two touchdowns, but also gave up two safeties.

Carr has 10 RBIs as Northern splits pair
HANCOCK — Brooks Carr hit two home runs and drove in 10 runs on the day as Northern split a pair of games at the Hancock Easter Classic, beating Broadfording Academy 26-1 before losing to St. James 10-6. Against Broadfording, Carr hit a three-run homer in a 10run first inning, and also had a two-run double, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to finish with seven RBIs. He also teamed with Brett Oates on a four-inning no-hitter. Carr struck out seven over the first three innings and Oates fanned two in the fourth.
MR beats Southern for 58th
OAKLAND — Mountain Ridge hit three home runs on the day and used a five-run second to pull away from Southern, 9-2, in an Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference action Saturday morning at Southern to extend its winning streak to 58 games.
