Frostburg settles for split of twinbill

FROSTBURG — Frostburg State’s Kenny Georgius threw a four-hit gem and remained unbeaten on the season by winning the first game, but Christopher Newport erupted for six runs in the ninth inning to keep the Bobcats from sweeping the day in Capital Athletic Conference baseball Sunday at Bob Wells Field.

The Bobcats won the opener 2-1. Christopher Newport took the nitecap 9-5.

The first game turned out to be a pitchers’ duel between Georgius and Christopher Newport’s Bryan Bierlein.

Georgius (5-0) was nearly unhittable, allowing four hits and one run over the nine-inning game and striking out seven. The Captains scored a run in the first, then Georgius shut the door with eight consecutive scoreless innings.

Bierlein (4-3) allowed one earned run and eight hits while fanning 10 for Christopher Newport.

Kevin Kean doubled and scored on a single by Dylan Shupe in the fourth to tie it 1-1. The winning run came in the seventh when Nick McElfish reached third on an outfield error and scored on a single by Brandon Remalia.

In the second game, Frostburg (19-6, 9-4) led 4-1 after three innings and 5-3 going into the ninth when the Captains (17-12, 9-4) scored six runs on five hits to take their first lead.

Jacob Houston had a game-tying RBI single and A.J. Nicely gave Christopher Newport the lead for good with a two-run double later in the inning.

McElfish had an RBI double in the second and Kean and Shupe back-to-back RBI doubles in the third to help FSU to the early lead. Ricky Brady had an RBI single in the fifth.

Ryan Redinger pitched the first six innings, allowed two earned runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts but did not figure in the decision.

Kean ended up 3 for 7 for the day with three runs scored and Kam Stewart was 3 for 6 with two stolen bases for Frostburg.

The Bobcats will play again at Shenandoah (Va.) University on Tuesday at 4 o’clock.
