Frostburg State, Garrett split Saturday doubleheaders

SALISBURY — Dylan Shupe doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and Kenny Georgius remained unbeaten by winning his sixth straight decision in leading Frostburg State to a 5-4 win over Salisbury in the first game of a Capital Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday.

The Sea Gulls earned a split by winning the second game, 3-1.

In the opener, Georgius (6-0) pitched four innings, allowed four hits and one run, walked one and struck out two to get the win. A perfectly-executed defensive relay from right fielder Nick McElfish and second baseman J.K. Filauro cut down the potential tying run at home plate in the Salisbury seventh and helped seal the FSU win.

Tied 3-3, Kevin Kean led off the sixth for Frostburg State (14-10, 3-6) with a double and moved to third on a single by Rob Jennings. Shupe’s double to right center scored Kean with the tie-breaking run and Jennings scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan McGuigan.

Kean and Shupe combined to go 4 for 4 with Kean scoring three runs and Shupe driving in two.

In the second game, Salisbury led 2-0 early, and FSU’s Danny Morris stroked an RBI single to cut the score to 2-1 in the second inning.

Frostburg was unable to muster any more offense as Dan Fein (5-0) went the distance for Salisbury (17-5, 6-4). He allowed five hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out four. The FSU run was the first earned run he has allowed this year.

Austin Poretz absorbed the loss with a complete game for Frostburg. He gave up only six hits, one earned run, walked four and struck out four.

Kean had two hits for Frostburg, which plays at Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday.

CCAC South    3   10

KEYSER, W.Va. — Garrett’s 10-run third inning sealed a win in the first game, but despite a big rally in the late innings of the second the Lakers were unable to complete the sweep and split a doubleheader with CCAC South Saturday at Potomac State College.

The Lakers (13-14) finished with 13 hits and got a solid performance from pitcher Joe Mascolo to win 13-3, then scored five runs over the final four innings in a comeback attempt that ended in a 10-8 loss.

Mascolo pitched all five innings in the first game, allowing only three hits and striking out nine.

Mike Ebola and Mike Ebola doubled, singled and knocked in two runs to lead the Garrett offense. Corey Beighan hit a two-run homer for CCAC South.

South scored 10 runs in the first three innings of the second game to build a 10-3 lead. John Buerkle went 4-for-5 with a double.

Garrett got a two-run home run in the seventh inning from Luis Rios, who also hit a single. Bryce Belcher and Bryor Weiss had two singles for the Lakers.

Garrett’s game at Allegany today has been postponed because of wet grounds and rescheduled on April 10.
