Oleksik, Delaney shine in Fort Cumberland’s sweep of Berkeley

— INWOOD, W.Va. — Matt Oleksik and Josh Delaney threw impressive completegame victories as Fort Cumberland Post 13 swept Berkeley Post 14, 3-2 and 4-0, in Senior American Legion baseball on Sunday.

The victories improve Fort Cumberland’s record to 6-2 heading into Tuesday’s Mountain District game against Grantsville, at 5:30 p.m., at Legion Field.

In Sunday’s opener, Oleksik tossed a three-hitter, walked only one and struck out five.

Fort Cumberland, down 1-0 early, grabbed the lead for good with a three-run fourth which was highlighted by a two-run single by Adam DuVall. Three of Post 13’s four hits came in the inning as Oleksik and Jack Hawkins also singled.

Derek Snyder absorbed the loss despite giving up just four singles.

In the second game, Delaney threw only 84 pitches in a fivehit shutout. He walked two, struck out one and was aided by errorless defense.

Brandon Stotler singled and scored on a single by Hawkins to put Fort Cumberland on the board in the fourth. It remained 1-0 until the seventh, when Post 13 pushed across three insurance runs.

DuVall led off with an infield single off the pitcher, and
moved to third on a single by Brady Hillegas. Josh Van Meter squeezed home DuVall, and Colton Sivic had a two-run single later in the inning.

Sivic had two singles to lead all hitters.

Romney 12 16 Grantsville 5 9

MCHENRY — Romney broke open tight games with big seventh innings and swept Grantsville Post 214 at Garrett College.

In the first game, Romney was clinging to a 4-3 lead after six innings before unloading for eight runs in the top of the seventh.

Shane Ennis hit a double and two singles, Ethan Turner had three singles and Braiden Popluhar a two-run double and single for Romney. David Delawder and Matt Maiers singled twice.

Brett Oates hit three singles and Brooks Carr had two for Grantsville.

Garrett Crawford went the distance for the win, allowing eight hits and striking out seven.

In the second game, Romney led 12-9 before putting up four insurance runs in the seventh.

Matt Maiers had a pair of doubles, a single and two RBIs, Popluhar had an RBI double and an RBI single, and David Delawder a double and single for the winners.

Oates and Hunter Hill had RBI doubles, Aaron Broadwater a single and two RBIs and Keith Chapman an RBI single for Grantsville (0-6), which will play again Tuesday at Fort Cumberland at 5:30.
