BEL AIR — Allegany College of Maryland trailed by five points after a back-and-forth first half, but a five-minute dry spell midway through the second half put the Trojans in too big a hole to dig out of during a 100-76 loss to Harford in the opening round of the Maryland JUCO Tournament.
Colby Giacubeno finished with 31 points and Dimitrious Jelen-Joy scored 24 for the Fighting Owls. Jeff Joynes and Carlos Brown scored 12 points each to help Harford outscore the Trojans 51-30 in the second half.
Ricky Mosley scored 14 points as Allegany’s leader. Davon Williams finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Tyson Reynolds had 13 boards to go with 10 points. Carlos Brown pitched in 12 points.
Howard 82, Garrett 67
COLUMBIA — Jaz Harris led a balanced attack with 18 points and seventh-seeded Howard pulled away from 10th-seeded Garrett in the second half to advance in the MDJUCO Tournament.
James Peters and Kayode Ajenifuja added 16 points and Brandon Spain had 14 for Howard (14-10), which led by only two, 37-35, at halftime.
Antonio Butler led Garrett (15-10) with a game high 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Din Moore and Guila Panzo had 10 points, and Marquise Green eight points and seven boards.
Garrett led by as many as eight points in the first half and were ahead by six in the second half until Howard took the lead for good with about six minutes to go.
The Lakers had a chance to close to within five but missed a shot in the lane and the Dragons answered with a three-point shot to pad their advantage to 10.
Garrett will host Potomac State in a regular-season game on Monday.
