KEYSER, W.Va. — Five Keyser wrestlers won region championships, 11 earned spots in the Class A-AA state tournament and the Golden Tornado won the Region 2 championship on the home mats on Saturday.
Keyser finished first in the 14-team field with 246 points and a commanding 75-point cushion over runner-up Braxton County, which had 171 points.
Lincoln and Grafton tied for third with 117 points. Petersburg was seventh with 90, Frankfort 11th with 45 and Moorefield 13th with 32.
The top four finishers in each weight division qualified for the state tournament, which begins Thursday at the Big Sandy Arena in Huntington. First-round matches begin at 6:30 p.m.
In the regional at Keyser, freshmen Ethen Whitlock (106-pound division) and Cody Rodeheaver (170), sophomore Garrett Crites (126), junior Jacob Mellott (160) and senior Derek Wilt (195) won individual championships.
Also advancing to Huntington for the Tornado were Beau Horner, runner-up in the 132 division; third-place finishers Cody Whitlock (145) and Josh Napier (220), and fourth-place finishers Hayden Siler (113), T.J. Whetzel (138) and Max Redman (182).
Frankfort’s lone qualifier was Braxton Lewis (170).
