Bi-State all-stars earn trip to state tourney

— SHORT GAP, W.Va. — The Bi-State Little League 10-11 Year-old All-Star team defeated tournament host Jefferson County, 6-0, in the championship of the West Virginia District 6 Tournament to advance to the West Virginia State Tournament, which begins Friday at the Tygarts Valley Little League Complex near Huttonsville.

Pool play will take place July 19-21. The top eight teams then earn a spot in a three-day single-elimination tournament with the winner earning the state title and an invitation to the Tournament of State Champions in Greenville, N.C.

Team members are Ben Nestor, Colton McTaggart, Brady Whitacre, David Blanco, Jachob Clark, Damon Spencer, Caleb Dell, Owen Sgaggero, Nick Marley, Mason Davis and Jansen Moreland.

In the District 6 championship game, Bi-State turned in a near flawless performance in defeating Jefferson County, highlighted by several outstanding defensive plays and a complete-game shutout pitching performance by Davis. The hitting attack was led by Spencer, Whitacre, Moreland and Davis.

Bi-State defeated Grant County to open the tournament. Spencer set the tone of the game by sending the second pitch of the game over the left field fence for a home run. Later, Whitacre followed Spencer’s lead with another long drive to clear the left center fence. The game also showcased a strong pitching performance with Spencer, Davis and Whitacre teaming to throw a four-inning no-hitter.

The next day the team defeated Hedgesville, 8-2, to earn a spot in the final. Spencer turned in an outstanding pitching performance, getting all but the final out before reaching his maximum number of allowed pitches. Timely hitting also came into play with Whitacre, Moreland, Davis, Nestor and McTaggart having multiple hits.
