Park’s hit lifts Team One to win

— HYNDMAN, Pa. — Hunter Park doubled home Kulen Flanagan in the fifth inning and Kris Tusing won an old-fashioned pitchers’ duel as Team One Auto Mall edged Hobo’s Restaurant, 1-0, in the opening game of their Hot Stove League playoff series Wednesday evening.

Tusing tossed a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts and received solid defensive play in going the distance. The Team One defense chased down 10 fly ball outs in addition to getting a double play to end the sixth inning.

Chaz Fatula was a tough-luck loser for Hobo’s, allowing only three hits and striking out 10 without issuing a walk.

The only run came in the top of the fifth when Kulen Flangan led off with a single and stole second. Two outs later, Park doubled into the left-center field gap.

Park’s double and singles by Flanagan and Austin Smith were the only Team One hits.

Fatula and Ross Bebout singled for Hobo’s only hits. After a one-out single in the sixth, Team One shortstop Ryan Roszell grabbed a line drive and fired to first to double up the runner and end the inning.

Both teams are now 16-9. Game two of the series is today, at 5:30 p.m., at Broadford Park.

GRANTSVILLE — Hunter Mallow pitched a complete-game five-hit shutout and hit a two-run double in the sixth to ice it, as Grantsville Sons of the American Legion opened its playoff series with Madigan’s Auto with a 3-0 win at Grantsville Park.

Sam Beeman singled in Ben Beeman in the fourth inning to put Grantsville up 1-0, and then in the sixth Mallow hit his two-run double to score Ian Tice and Sam Beeman. Beeman had doubled to put runners on second and third before Mallow’s double, and then Mallow took it from there the rest of the way on the hill.

Brandon Hanline and Logan Hinebaugh both singled and doubled for Madigan’s. Hanline pitched a complete-game six-hitter and struck out five.

The teams will meet again today, 5:30 p.m., at Southern High School.
