Frostburg women defeat Altoona in final relay

ALTOONA, Pa. — The Frostburg State swimming teams split with Penn State Altoona Saturday afternoon in the Lions’ pool. The women pulled out a 97-94 win with a victory in the final relay while the men suffered a 121-63 setback.

The women were all tied up with Penn State Altoona going into the 200-yard freestyle relay and needed to finish first to capture the victory.

After a fast start by sophomore Sara King, the Bobcats were in good shape to take the race. Sophomore Jaclyn Franzak followed with a 28.45 leg to put FSU even further ahead and after a 28.42 leg from freshman Maci Quintanilla, sophomore Elizabeth Jarrell sealed the win with an impressive 27.95 leg. FSU finished at 1:54.56, a four seconds ahead of Altoona.

FSU posted six wins, including the 200-yard freestyle relay and six second place finishes, led by sophomore Kaitlyn Donch who captured two wins and a second. Donch earned her first victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:51.99. She came back in her next event to win the 500-yard free, touching the wall at 5:48.58 before taking second in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:16.02.

Sophomore Meredith Johnson had a strong showing positing an individual win in the 200-yard free at 2:20.90 and teaming with graduate student Autumn Phillips, Franzak and Jarrell for a second place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:06.44.

Jarrell and Quintanilla posted back-to-back second place finishes, Jarrell in the 50-yard free (28.54) before Quintanilla followed with a time of 2:35.68 in the 200-yard individual medley.

After a first-place time for Franzak in the 100-yard butterfly (1:09.58), Phillips and King followed with a 1-2 showing in the 100-yard free. Phillips came in at 1:03.92 followed by King at 1:05.56. Quintanilla picked up her final second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:12.37.

The men’s team posted three wins and three seconds.

The 200-yard medley relay squad of junior Jesse Gregory, freshman Jonathan Shepard and seniors Caleb Stair and Jeffrey Lewis finished a close second with a time of 1:49.27. Stair picked up the first win with an impressive 57.75 in the 100-yard butterfly. Gregory followed with a second place time in the 100-yard free at 53.79.

Shepard and freshman Andrew Richardson combined for a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with Shepard coming in at 1:06.56 and Richardson at 1:25.74. The 200-yard freestyle relay group of junior Vincent Faiella, Lewis, Gregory and Stair capped off the meet with a winning time of 1:39.71.

The Bobcats will face West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday, Nov. 30, begining at 6 p.m.

    HANCOCK — Brooks Carr hit two home runs and drove in 10 runs on the day as Northern split a pair of games at the Hancock Easter Classic, beating Broadfording Academy 26-1 before losing to St. James 10-6. Against Broadfording, Carr hit a three-run homer in a 10run first inning, and also had a two-run double, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to finish with seven RBIs. He also teamed with Brett Oates on a four-inning no-hitter. Carr struck out seven over the first three innings and Oates fanned two in the fourth.
