FSU loses home opener

Mount Aloysius, behind former Southern star, wins 91-85

FROSTBURG — Former Southern High School standout Jeff Stem scored 21 points to help Mount Aloysius defeat Frostburg State 91-85 Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.

Stem made 10 baskets, including three three-pointers, and sank four of six from the free throw line to finish as the Mounties second-leading scorer. Teammate Thomas Tanner had a game-high 28, making 12 baskets and four of five free throws.

Frostburg State’s Christian Jackson finished with 21 points, making six field goals, three three-pointers and six out of eight foul shots. DeSean Antoine added 17, Kwambina Coker 11 and Jabari Kamau 10.

The Bobcats (3-5), playing in their first home game, trailed by 13 with 2:13 remaining before an aggressive 10-point rally brought the score to within three and ignited the Bobcat Arena crowd.

Freshman Nick Smoot started the rally with a layup at 2:08 and stole the ensuing inbounds pass. Kamau hit a layup nearly 10 seconds later, stole the ball and hit a three-pointer at 1:33 as the Bobcats trailed by six, 85-79. Kamau again stole an inbounds pass and Jackson hit two foul shots to pull within three, 85-82.

Antoine had a game-high four three-pointers for the Bobcats.

Sophomore David Patrick hit a three-pointer just over two minutes into the opening half as FSU built a 10-2 lead and controlled the tempo early on.

The Mounties slowly worked their way back and a Stem three-pointer tied it at 26 with eight minutes to go in the first half. Stem hit another three at 1:57 to give Mount Aloysius an eight-point cushion, 40-32.

Bobcat senior Micah Steinmiller hit a layup as time expired in the first half with FSU trailing 42-37.

Mount Aloysius led for the entire second half and a quick 9-0 spurt gave it a 12-point lead, 57-47 at 14:23.

Frostburg State visits rival Salisbury in a Capital Athletic Conference game Saturday at 3 p.m.
