Southern beats Tucker, 83-70

Ritchie’s 30 helps No. 4 Rams deal Mountain Lions a rare loss

OAKLAND — Lucas Ritchie poured in 30 points and fourth-ranked Southern hit 11 three-point goals in an 83-70 victory over rival Tucker County on Wednesday evening.

The win was the fourth in a row for the high-scoring Rams (6-4), who have put up 80 or more points in half of their games.

Last night, the Rams had 50 points and a nine-point lead at halftime. They were up 65-56 heading into the fourth quarter.

Ritchie, a 6-foot-2 senior, made 10 field goals, four three-point goals, all six of his free throws, and also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in leading the way.

Clay Todd hit 13 of 14 free throws and scored 17 points, Sam Friend hit four three-pointers for 12 points, and Josh Adams had 10 points for the Rams, who made 22 of 23 free throws.

Southern made six of its 11 three-point goals in the second quarter. Friend gave the Rams a big lift off the bench and hit three of his four three-pointers during the quarter.

Mitchell Mason had 17 points, Austin Zirk 16 and Ian Nichols 14 for Tucker County (6-2), No. 8 in the West Virginia Class A poll, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.

Southern also won the jayvee game 48-34 with Tyler Fazenbaker scoring 16 points and Bret Gebhardt 12. Andrew Houser had 10 for Tucker.

Southern will host county rival Northern on Friday.

BAKER, W.Va. — Michael Miller scored 32 points and hit four three-point shots to carry East Hardy past visiting Union.

Miller canned 12 field goals and made 4 of 10 free throws for the Cougars (2-6), who led 13-10 after one quarter and pulled away by outscoring the Tigers 32-19 over the middle periods. It was 45-29 heading into the fourth.

Nathan Evans led Union (3-6) with 14 points and nine rebounds while Travis Murphy had 13 points, three steals and two assists.

East Hardy won the jayvee game 43-28. Caleb Tallman had 10 points for Union.

Union will host Paw Paw in a tripleheader on Friday. The middle school teams play at 5 p.m., followed by the jayvees and varsity.

MCCONNELLSBURG, Pa. — McConnellsburg finished with four players with double-double points and held Hyndman to two points in the second quarter during a 22-point win over the Hornets Wednesday evening.

Jyrelle White led all players by scoring 17 points, Matt Snyder and Chase Novak had 12 points and Chase Boehme scored 11 more in the win.

The Hornets were led by Seth Cook’s 16 points and Josh Hiquet’s 11. Jordan Hiquet added eight points.

Hyndman lost the junior varsity game 54-20. Elijah Stair had nine points in the loss.

Hyndman (4-7) returns home to play Fort Hill on Saturday.
