WALDORF — Mountain Ridge fell to eventual state champion Kent Island, 33-25, in the first round of the Maryland 1A-2A State Dual Wrestling Championships Wednesday at North Point High School.
Austin Clark and Devin Femi both won by pin for the Miners, Clark pinning Kent’s Kelsey Haigler in 3:03 in 195 pounds, and Femi pinning Brett Ogden in 1:42 in 106 pounds.
Adam Martz won by a 12-3 major decision over Colton Smith in 152 pounds, while Matt Whetstone (220), Colten White (120) and Tyler Maynard (170) won by decisions.
Kent Island went on to win the championship by beating Hereford, 35-33.
Mountain Ridge, the West Region champion, finished the season with a regular-season dual record of 16-1 and an overall dual record of 28-3. Mountain Ridge's three losses were to Kent Island (1A-2A state champions), Damascus (3A-4A state champions), and River Hill (3A-4A state semifinalist). Mountain Ridge had wins this year over state-ranked teams Williamsport, Catoctin, Southern Garrett and Middletown.
Mountain Ridge will wrestle in the Bi-County Tournament Saturday at Southern. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m.
