Fetters, Ellsworth pitch Titans over O’s in sweep

POTOMAC PARK — Tony Fetters and Cody Ellsworth limited the Cumberland Orioles to only four hits all afternoon as the two pitchers led the Tri-State Titans to a sweep of the Orioles Sunday at Hamilton Field.

Fetters made his season debut memorable for the Titans by allowing only one hit, striking out nine and with only two passes as the Titans beat the Orioles 7-0.

In the second game, Ellsworth gave up three hits while striking out six as the Titans won 3-1.

Mike Hutchinson was the big hitter in the first game with three base hits and three RBIs. Both Matt Wright and Drew O’Neal had two singles and the Titans stole eight bases.

Jim Taylor had the only hit for the Orioles.

In the second game, Brian Powell and Pat Livingston each had a double and a single while Wright, O’Neal and Sean Collette all had RBI singles.

Ethan Landis had an RBI single in the fifth inning for the Orioles. Zach Bradfield scattered eight hits and struck out seven in taking the loss.

Tri-State improved to 11-1 with the victories. The Orioles dropped to 5-7.

OAKLAND — Tommy Reams drove in five runs in the first game and belted a two-run home run in the second game as the Oakland Oaks swept the West Virginia Powerhouse Sunday afternoon at Southern High School.

Reams had three hits, including a double, with five RBIs to power the Oaks’ 10-hit attack in the 11-0 first game. Jashanno Sweeting also had three hits with a double. Ryan Combs had two of the Powerhouse’s four hits with a base hit and a triple.

In the second game, Oakland again belted out 10 hits to win 8-0. Cameron King and Reams both had two hits with King stealing two bases. Jason Ashby had an RBI triple and Reams had a base hit to go with his two-run, third inning home run. Eli Bender belted a double and Scott Cooper had an RBI single.

Norm Hall had two hits and one of the Powerhouse’s seven stolen bases.

Winning pitcher Cody Toothman and reliever Ashby combined for seven strikeouts and a walk. Toothman struck out four.

Oakland is now 8-4 and West Virginia drops to 0-12.

The Pen-Mar League is idle next weekend and will return action the weekend of July 6 to 7.
