Ultimate Archer tourney Sunday

BERLIN, Pa. — The Mountain Bowmen Archery Club in Berlin, just off Route 219, will hold an Ultimate Archer Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 29, 8:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. The shoot includes 1/2 Field Round (marked distances), 15 3-D Animals, and 4 ends of 5 spot (20 yards, indoor). Youth yardages will be marked with a maximum shooting distance of 40 yards. There will be trophy and money classes.

Cam Newton

fined $10,000

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has fined Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton $10,000 for wearing clips on his helmet visor featuring the Under Armour logo.

Although the clips that attach Newton’s clear visor to the helmet are small and difficult to see, the league considers it a violation of its equipment policy.

NFL rules state that “No visible identification of a manufacturer’s name or logo on the exterior of a helmet or on any attachment to a helmet is permitted unless provided for under a commercial arrangement between the League and manufacturer.”

Nike has a signed contract to be the NFL’s equipment provider. Newton is one of Under Armour’s main clients.

Langer shoots 63 to take Champions Tour lead by four

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Bernhard Langer birdied his first four holes and finished with a 9-under 63 to open a four-stroke lead Friday in the Champions Tour’s First Tee Open.

The German star, a two-time winner this year on the 50-and-over tour, had nine birdies in his bogey-free round at Del Monte Country Club. He had a 6-under 30 on the back nine — his opening nine.

Defending champion Kirk Triplett, Tom Lehman, Andrew Magee, Mark McNulty and Doug Garwood were tied for second at 67. They also all played at Del Monte. Fred Couples shot 68 at Del Monte.

The final round Sunday will be played at Pebble Beach.
