VanMeter delivers for Mountain Ridge

Walk-off single lifts Miners past Northern

FROSTBURG — Josh VanMeter’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Mountain Ridge a 3-2 win over Northern in Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference baseball Tuesday at Mountain Ridge.

With two outs in the ninth, Jake Kyle singled and stole second to set the stage for VanMeter’s game-winning hit.

Branden Markwood walked six but gave up just two runs on three hits through six innings. Van Meter got the win, allowing two hits and striking out four in 2 2-3 innings.

The Mountain Ridge defense came up with huge plays in consecutive innings behind Markwood. Northern had runners on first and third and one out in the fourth when right fielder A.J. Winters caught a fly ball and threw the runner, representing the go-ahead run, out at the plate to end the inning. In the fifth, with a Northern runner on third, the Miners turned an unconventional 6-2-4 double play to end the threat.

Aaron Rodeheaver was a hard luck loser, pitching nine innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out 10. Justin Derato and Trevon Jones hit RBI singles in the second inning for Northern’s runs.

Mountain Ridge (6-4, 4-2 in AMAC) hosts Keyser today at 4:30. Northern (6-6, 4-4 in AMAC) hosts Allegany on Friday at 4:30.

MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Austin Williams pitched a complete game and Adam Snyder went 4 for 4 to lead Moorefield over Southern.

Williams struck out seven and walked just one in holding Southern to a single run on eight hits. Snyder hit two doubles and two singles, knocked in a run and scored a run. Lance Taylor doubled, knocked in two and scored two, while Garrett Keller doubled home a pair of runs.

Seth Holler had two singles for the Rams, knocking in their only run in the seventh.

Moorefield (13-4) will play today at Tucker County. Southern (2-7) hosts Hampshire today.

Washington    10

PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Brandon George, Trevor Harman and Ryan Hedrick drove in two runs for Petersburg as they outlasted Washington.

Ryan Colaw, Brett Reel and Alex See had two hits while Doug Lambert and Justin Smith added RBI singles for the Vikings (11-3).

Colin Gustines and Hunter Weaver each brought in three runs for Washington. Seth Campbell went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Drew Hetzel tripled in the loss.

Petersburg hosts Hampshire on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Heritage 14, Calvary Christian 3

POTOMAC PARK — Bill Nigh tossed a three-hitter and struck out 12 to lead Heritage past Calvary Christian in a Mason-Dixon Conference game at Hamilton Field.

Nigh also led the offense for Heritage, which scored nine runs in the first two innings, with three singles and three runs scored.

Zach Nelson doubled, singled and knocked in two runs and Mark Capper doubled and scored a run for Calvary.

The Eagles (6-3, 5-2) will host Cumberland Valley on Friday.

Tygarts Valley 8, Pendleton 6

FRANKLIN, W.Va. — Winning pitcher Owen Arbogast singled and knocked in a pair of runs to lead Tygarts Valley past Pendleton in a Potomac Valley Conference game.

Brandon Pritt tripled and Ryan Hoffman had a two-run double for Tygarts Valley.

Tim Hevener stroked three singles, Andrew Thompson had a two-run single and Jesse Lambert addd two singles and an RBI for Pendleton, which outhit Tygarts Valley 10-7.

The Wildcats (9-6, 7-2 PVC) play at East Hardy tonight at 7 o’clock

    HANCOCK — Brooks Carr hit two home runs and drove in 10 runs on the day as Northern split a pair of games at the Hancock Easter Classic, beating Broadfording Academy 26-1 before losing to St. James 10-6. Against Broadfording, Carr hit a three-run homer in a 10run first inning, and also had a two-run double, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to finish with seven RBIs. He also teamed with Brett Oates on a four-inning no-hitter. Carr struck out seven over the first three innings and Oates fanned two in the fourth.
