Keyser blasts TC 25-3 in opener

KEYSER, W.Va. — Keyser blew the doors off the season opener with Tucker County by scoring eight runs in the first and third innings during a 25-3 blowout of the Mountain Lions Thursday afternoon at John Kruk Field.

Derrike Riley brought home four runs on four singles as the main culprit for the Golden Tornado offense. Josh Bane knocked in three with a double and a single, Logan Robinette singled three times to drive in a pair of runs and Michael Cuthbertson had two RBIs on a double. Noah Hartman gave Keyser two singles and two RBIs, Hunter Housel had a single and two RBIs and Travis Smith collected three base hits. Daniel Troup, Beau Horner and Andrew Liller each had one RBI single.

Horner struck out eight batters, allowed three hits and three earned runs in two-plus innings of work. Robinette added four more strikeouts out of the bullpen.

Malone led Tucker with a double and Fridley added two singles.

Keyser (1-0) plays at Allegany today at 4 p.m.

PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Jace Shanholtz and Alex See combined for a one-hitter while their offense supported them with 11 hits and 10 runs during a win over East Hardy Thursday afternoon.

Shanholtz worked the first five innings and struck out four while allowing one run. See entered in the sixth and tossed two scoreless innings in relief.

The Vikings (2-0) got two singles each out of Trent Boorer and Ryan Colaw. Nick Dolly drove in two runs with a single and Colaw had two RBIs with his singles. Brandon George, Ryan VanMeter and Josh Inskeep all finished with a single and an RBI.

Mike Miller had the lone hit for the Cougars with a double.

Petersburg will play Saturday in a 1 o’clock doubleheader at Spring Mills.

Pendleton County    20

Pocahontas County    0

FRANKLIN, W.Va. — Tim Heavner and Callum McGrath combined for a one-hitter in Pendleton’s season-opening win over Pocahontas.

Heavner fanned eight of the nine batters he faced in the first three innings and McGrath added four for a total of 13 in the five-inning win.

The Wildcats scored 10 runs in their first at bats, four more runs in the second and finished with six in the third. Heavner and Tyler Shears each had three runs batted in with two base hits, and Luke Cooper had a triple, double and a single. Logan Cooper hit two doubles and drove in two.

Pendleton (1-0) hosts Bath County (Va.) today at 4:30.
