CUMBERLAND — Mountain Ridge’s Kiya Wilhelm went 3 for 3 with five RBI’s, including a three-run home run, in the Miners’ 13-2 victory over Northern on Thurday evening at Cavanaugh Field.
The Miners surrendered two first-inning runs, falling behind the Huskies. Northern maintained its 2-0 lead until the third inning.
Entering the bottom of the third, Mountain Ridge, who had been held hitless, finally got things going by scoring six runs in the third, highlighted by Wilhelm’s round-tripper for a 6-2 lead.
Mountain Ridge scored another run in the fifth inning, and matched its third inning total by scoring six more runs in the bottom of the sixth and final inning.
Ridge’s starting pitcher Jenna Miller rebounded from allowing two early runs to go the distance in the win. Miller allowed five hits and recorded five strikeouts with only one walk.
Anna Broadwater was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored for Mountain Ridge, who reached based 19 times on 12 hits and seven walks.
Northern’s Ericka Umbel pitched four innings, allowing six runs on four hits — driving in one of the runs. Morgan Marple drove in the other run.
Mountain Ridge (2-0) will take its 48-game win streak into Saturday’s doubleheader against Frankfort, starting at 12 p.m. at Cavanaugh Field. Northern (0-1) plays today at 4:15 p.m. against Salisbury.
East Hardy 0
PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Marley Thompson opened her season by striking out 12, walking none and not allowing a hit to lead her Petersburg Vikings to a win by no-hitting the East Hardy Cougars Tuesday afternoon.
Thompson was one baserunner away from a perfect game after one Cougar reached on an error.
East Hardy’s Jodie Funkhouser was solid on the mound as well, allowing only two runs and one walk with six strikeouts in taking the loss. The Vikings got a run in the first inning and another in the fifth and had seven hits.
Cheyenne Earle singled twice for Petersburg. Brooke Hott also had two singles as well as an RBI in the fifth.
The Vikings (1-0) play Allegany today, 4:30, at Carl Belt Field.
