SALISBURY — Frostburg State gave top-seeded and third-ranked Salisbury all it could handle on its home field Friday afternoon but came up short in the end, losing 3-2 in eight innings in the Capital Athletic Association softball tournament.
Frostburg State (28-11) will play second-seeded Mary Washington this morning, at 10 o’clock, in an elimination game. The winner will face Salisbury, needing to beat the Sea Gulls (34-2) twice to win the double-elimination tournament.
Down 2-0 with just one hit through six innings, former Fort Hill High star Shari Beavers got FSU back into it with one swing of the bat when she belted a two-out, two-run homer over the centerfield fence to tie the game 2-2. Lauren Williams, who had singled, also scored on the homer.
It remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when, with one out, Katie Sebbane singled home the winning run for the Sea Gulls.
FSU starter Mary Ann Moore (16-5) allowed three earned runs and five hits in 7 1-3 innings. Salisbury’s Rachel Johnson struck out 13 in seven innings.
Frostburg 5, Mary Washington 4
SALISBURY — Frostburg State scored three runs in the first inning and took advantage of three Mary Washington errors to beat the Eagles in th second round of the CAC Tournament on Friday.
Shari Beavers and Lauren Capece drove in runs an Taylor Vandegrift scored on an error in the first inning for the third-seeded Bobcats (28-10).
Second-seeded Mary Washington (14-22) tied it 3-3 in the second inning. FSU regained the lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, then worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh.
Mary Ann Moore scattered six hits and struck out eight in getting her 16th win. Capece and Bailey Ellsworth were 2 for 3 while Beavers had two RBIs.
PSC splits with So. Maryland
LA PLATA — Allie Lockhart’s RBI sacrifice fly brought in the game-winning run for Potomac State in a 6-5 win in eight innings, but that was followed by an 8-5 loss on a walk-off homer in a split doubleheader at Southern Maryland Friday.
Lockhart’s go-ahead RBI came with the bases loaded in the eighth. Bethani Chambers and Erica Doyle both went 4-for-4. Morgan Wright added three singles.
Tori Wright singled twice for Southern Maryland.
Cheyenne Faunce hit the 3-run walk-off homer in game two for the Hawks.
The Catamounts had two outs and a 2-run lead in the final inning before allowing five runs, including Faunce’s walk-off.
For Potomac State, Britani Chambers launched a solo home run. Savannah Hose was 4-for-4. Taylor Rice slapped three singles and Doyle hit two in the loss.
Potomac State (21-6) hosts Westmoreland in a doubleheader beginning at noon today.
