Moorefield earns trip to state tournament

MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Brooke Riggleman and Beth Cook homered in a three-run first inning and Taylor Zuber fired a three-hit shutout Thursday night as Moorefield overpowered South Harrison, 9-0, to win the Region 2 championship and a trip to next week’s Class A state softball tournament.

The win was the 14th in a row for coach Tammie Ayers’ Yellow Jackets (26-3). They will play the Region 3 champion, which will be either Man or Fayetteville, in an opening round game of the state tournament on Wednesday, at 10:15 a.m., in Vienna.

Riggleman belted a two-run homer and Cook added a solo shot in the first inning as the Yellow Jackets stung South Harrison with three quick runs. They added two more in the third and four in the bottom of the fourth. The game was shortened to 4 1-2 innings by the mercy rule.

Zuber was in control on the mound the whole way, allowing only three hits while striking out nine and not walking a batter.

Riggleman finished 2 for 2 with a homer, single and three RBIs to lead Moorefield’s 10-hit attack. Katelynn Wills tripled and singled, Dani Rogers and Michaela Regester doubled and singled, and McKenzie Weese had a single and an RBI. Shayna Vetters reached base in both of her at bats and scored a run.
