SHORT GAP, W.Va. — Erica Umbel held Frankfort hitless for three innings while her Northern teammates provided plenty of support as the Huskies enforced the mercy rule during a 14-0 win over the Falcons on Thursday evening.
Umbel finished with three strikeouts and four walks allowed over the three innings during her no-hitter. Northern took plenty advantage of the lack of offense by the Falcons by scoring six runs in the first inning, four more in the second and four more in the third.
Morgan Marple led the way at the plate with three singles. Kayla Porter, Erica Umbel and Erin Holtschneider all added one single and two runs scored.
Northern (2-0) plays tonight at home against Salisbury. Frankfort (1-6) is at Mountain Ridge on Saturday.
PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Marley Thompson allowed two hits on the mound while collecting two hits at the plate to lead Petersburg to a shutout of Moorefield Wednesday evening.
Thompson had seven strikeouts, allowed two walks and two singles in five innings of work. The Vikings won after five innings due to West Virginia’s eight-run rule.
Offensively, Thompson delivered a three-run double during the first inning that helped lead to seven runs during the Vikings first at bats. She added a single, and Petersburg scored its final run in the second inning.
The Vikings also got a double and a single from Cheyenne Earle, two hits from Brittani Bible and a two-run single from Brooke Hott.
Petersburg (2-1) plays in the Diamond Dawg Tournament at North Marion beginning today at 5 p.m. when it faces Clay-Battelle.
