Area standouts shine on college teams
PHILIPPI, W.Va. — Alderson-Broaddus junior Jeff Conley was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Hitter of the Week recently.
Conley, of Fort Ashby and the 2010 Times-News high school player of the year at Frankfort, also was the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week a week ago when he hit .545 (12 for 22) in six games. He had a home run, three doubles, seven runs batted in and two stolen bases.
For the season, Conley is hitting .354 (28 for 79) with five doubles, a triple, two home runs and a team-leading 18 RBIs. He is 2-1 as a pitcher with a team best 2.73 earned run average.
• Former Allegany High and Allegany College standout Sean Collette is hitting .272 (22 for 81) and leads the team with 19 runs scored and seven doubles. He also has two homers and 14 RBIs.
Alderson-Broaddus is 13-10 and begins a three-game series at Shepherd today.
• Former Allegany High standout Alexa Sivic continues to excel on the softball field in her freshman year at Hood College.
Through 19 games, Sivic, a catcher/first baseman, was hitting .379 (22 for 58) with three doubles, three home runs and 17 RBIs. She is tied for the team lead in home runs, is second in RBIs, third in slugging percentage (.586) and fourth in on-base percentage (.429).
Hood is 14-5 and hosts Albright in a doubleheader today before playing at Frostburg State in a 1 p.m. twinbill on Sunday.
Eagles past Grace
HAGERSTOWN — Mikala Ultis booted a pair of second-half goals to spark Calvary Christian to a 2-0 win over Grace Academy in the Lady Eagles’ high school soccer season opener on Friday.
After a scoreless first half, Ultis broke the ice with a goal on an assist from Ellyn Daniels 17:57 into the second. Ultis made it 2-0 with another goal, on an a feed from Abby Daniels, at 23:20.
Calvary led in shots, 16-6. Kerenne Shaffer got the shutout in goal with six saves. Grace goalie Allie Cox had 13 saves.
The Eagles play again Monday at Shalom.
