Fike, Northern beat Keyser

ACCIDENT — Northern used four consecutive single-run innings to start the game in coming out with a 4-3 win over Keyser in a finely-pitched contest by Northern’s Jerad Fike and Keyser’s Timmy Shaffer Monday at Northern.

The Huskies’ Fike gave up five hits in getting the win, one being an infield hit, striking out four and walking just one. The Golden Tornado’s Shaffer worked the first five innings, giving up three hits, walking five and hitting a batter. He forced the Huskies to strand eight runners in the second, third and fourth innings.

Fike had an RBI single in the first inning for the Huskies, while Aaron Broadwater had an RBI single in the fourth.

Cody Eversole had two singles for Keyser. Logan Robinette and Vinny Cuthbertson both had RBI singles.

Northern (4-3 overall, 3-1 Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference) will play at Frankfort today at 4:30 p.m. Keyser (0-8, 0-5) will play Wednesday at Frankfort.

Northern and Keyser played to a six-inning 6-6 tie in the junior varsity game.

Meshach Metz doubled and singled twice for Northern. Clark Morin had two singles and an RBI, Tyler McClintock three singles and an RBI and Ben Beeman a two-run double. T. Smith had a two-run double and a single for Keyser, Whitacre an RBI single and Horner a double.

Northern (3-0-1) will play Wednesday, 4:30 p.m., at Mountain Ridge.

FRANKLIN, W.Va. — Pendleton County had a 10-run second and banged out 20 hits for the game in defeating Union Monday in five innings at Pendleton County.

Winning pitcher Callum McGrath had three singles and two runs batted in for Pendleton, while Kim Heavner doubled and tripled to knock in a run and Jesse Lambert doubled twice. Andrew Thompson doubled and singled to knock in three runs.

Travis Murphy had Union’s only hit, a single, in the Tigers’ two-run fifth.

McGrath worked four innings and did not give up a hit, striking out four and walking two before giving way to Dylan Wimer for the fifth.

Pendleton County (5-4 overall, 4-0 PVC) will play today, 5 p.m., at Pocahontas County. Union visits East Hardy today.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Calvary Christian Academy broke open a three-run game with seven runs in the third inning and then put the game away with eight more in the fifth to defeat Shalom on Monday afternoon.

The victory keeps the Eagles undefeated at 3-0 going into today’s 4:30 p.m. home-opener against Broadfording Christian Academy at the Hot Stove Complex’s Hamilton Field.

The Eagles outhit Shalom 16-10. Mark Capper was the leading hitter with two doubles, a single and he scored twice. Justin Swogger also scored twice while hitting a double and a triple. Levi Hartsock had two singles and scored three times.

The Eagles led 4-1 and 5-2 after the first two innings. It was 12-4 after three and 12-5 going to the sixth before Calvary put it out of reach with its eight runs to take a 20-5 lead. Shalom managed only two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Gavin Hart had eight strikeouts and three walks, giving up 10 hits in picking up the complete-game victory.

Calvary is 2-0 in the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference.

HYNDMAN, Pa. — Hope for Hyndman Charter School combined for 35 runs in sweeping a doubleheader from Paw Paw Monday at Hope for Hyndman.

In the opener, Micah Stair had three hits and four runs batted in for the Hornets, while Jack Leydig doubled and singled to knock in two runs. Daniel Wisnewski hit a home run and Brad Torbet knocked in three runs.

Paw Paw’s Powell had two hits.

In the second game, M.J. Messenger had four hits and knocked in three runs for the Hornets. Chad Deneen hit a home run and a single, while Wisnewski had two hits and knocked in four runs. Leydig had two doubles and Torbet a triple.

Hope for Hyndman (3-2) will play Thursday at Calvary Christian Academy.
