INWOOD, W.Va. — Mandy Sweitzer scored all six of her points during overtime to help keep No. 1 Southern on its winning streak by beating Musselman 49-46 Saturday night.
It is the sixth win in a row for the Rams (10-1), and the second time in the last three games that Southern has had to win in overtime. It needed extra time to beat Hampshire 57-49 on Jan. 12.
With the score tied at 34 at the end of regulation, Sweitzer came out to score six of her team’s 15 points in the final minutes to help them lock up the win. Alicia Roth scored a game-high 14 points, while Hannah Horne had 10. Both Kambrie Bosley and Raeslee Weimer added seven points.
A slow first quarter led to the Applemen leading 6-4 at the end of one quarter and 16-9 at halftime. Southern shook its funk to fight back and pull to within two points, 26-24, at the end of three quarters. The Rams had a 34-32 lead, but Musselman got two free throws with 15 seconds left to tie the score and Southern couldn’t get a good look at a final shot.
Logan Kerr scored 14 points to lead the Applemen.
Ashley Green scored seven points during Southern’s 44-28 jayvee win.
Southern plays at home on Monday against Allegany.
