CUMBERLAND — Dakota Bierman’s header in the second overtime was enough for Allegany to defeat Northern, 1-0, in the Maryland 1A West Semifinals at Greenway Ave. Stadium on Saturday.
The opposing teams repeatedly turned each other away for nearly 95 minutes. In the second overtime, the ball popped up in the air inside the goalie box and was headed in by Bierman with at 5:28.
“We stayed focused and disciplined. We were persistent and kept knocking at the door,” Allegany coach Stephen Cavallo opined.
Nate Condor stopped six shots in goal for the Campers. Alex Durst fended off seven shots in a tough loss for the Huskies.
“Hats off to Northern. They worked extremely hard. They’re a good program. Today was the definition of playoff soccer.” Cavallo added.
Allegany is 15-0-1 overall and will play the winner of Brunswick and Clear Spring at Greenway Ave. Stadium on Monday at 6 p.m.
Mtn. Ridge 3
FROSTBURG — Annabelle Hegeman had a goal and an assist to power top-seeded Mountain Ridge to a 3-0 win over fifth-seeded Smithsburg in their Maryland Class 1A West Region soccer semifinal Saturday at Mountain Ridge.
The Miners went up 1-0 just 8:15 into the game on a direct kick by Hegeman that was knocked in by Casey Felker.
In the second half, Hegeman scored on a direct kick from 35 yards away to put Mountain Ridge up 2-0 with 31:18 remaining. Lexie Metz virtually sealed it with 21:59 left on an assist from Carlie Lewis.
Chelsea Muir had four saves to lead an outstanding defensive effort from the Miners. Leah Ellis stopped four shots and Corinne Burke halted two in goal for Smithsburg.
Mountain Ridge, now 14-1-1 overall, will host Brunswick on Tuesday, at 5 p.m., for the region championship and trip to the state tournament.
Clear Spring 2
Fort Hill 0
HAGERSTOWN — Clear Spring managed a goal in each half, and the Blazers defense limited Fort Hill to two shots to beat the Sentinels 2-0 Thursday in the Maryland 1A West playoffs at North Hagertown.
C.J. Elwood converted an assist from Nick Brandt at the 21:15 mark of the first half to give Clear Spring a 1-0 lead, and Kevin Carbajal knocked in a rebound off the Fort Hill goalie to make it 2-0 with 1:45 remaining in the contest.
Clear Spring outshot the Sentinels 20-2 and had a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. Levi Bucher stopped both of the Sentinels shots in the the shutout, and Fort Hill keeper Jarrett Wolfe made 12 saves.
Fort Hill finishes the season 5-8-2.
