SMITHSBURG — The Mountain Ridge and Southern Garrett cross country teams and Fort Hill’s Chelsea Reikie will be competing in Saturday’s Cross County State Championships after finishing among the top four teams in the Class 1A West Regional last week.
The state championships will be held on the hilly, challenging Hereford High School course in Parkton. The 1A girls race begins at 1:30 and the 1A boys race at 2:30.
The Mountain Ridge boys had the best showing of the local teams at last week’s regional. Smithsburg won the team title with 25 points and Mountain Ridge was second with 68. North Carroll, third with 74, and Southern, fourth with 97, also qualified their teams.
Boonsboro’s Sean Snyder was the individual region champion with a time of 16:59.1. Mountain Ridge had two top-10 finishers with Rhett Poland taking fourth in 17:48.4 and Brandon Redmond placing eighth in 18:12.2. Other Miners among the top 20 were Daryl Griffiths (17th, 18:35.5), David Hammett (19th, 18:40.3) and Jody Besaw (20th, 18:52.3).
Zak Thomas led Southern by finishing sixth in 18:04.1. Other Rams in the top 20 were Greyson Messenger (11th, 18:15.2) and Devan Hamrick (18th, 18:36.3).
In the girls race, Boonsboro won with 32 points, followed by Manchester Valley with 45, Mountain Ridge with 79, and Southern with 112.
Boonsboro’s Sarah Zielinski was the individual winner with a time of 19:34.1.
Mountain Ridge’s Alexis DeVault was the only local runner to finish in the top 10, taking fourth in 20:32.9.
Also among the top 20 were Southern’s Holly Weissgerber (11th, 21:40), Mountain Ridge’s Leah Yazdani (13th, 21:51.9), Andy Bennett (14th, 22:02.4) and Madison Poland (17th, 22:38.4), and Fort Hill’s Reikie, who qualified for the state meet as an individual by finishing 12th in 21:40.6.
