Lovend, Shupe players of week
YORK, Pa. — Frostburg State junior Caitlin Lovend was named the Capital Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week, while junior Dylan Shupe was selected the conference’s Baseball Player of the Week for the period ending April 14.
Lovend earned the softball honor for the second consecutive week after smashing 13 hits in 28 at-bats in eight games (.464 avg.) with a double, two home runs, eight runs scored and 16 RBIs. S
Lovend, who ranks nationally in the top-10 in home runs and walks, leads the conference in batting average (.470) and is second in home runs (11) and RBIs (45).
Shupe hit .600 (9 for 15) with five extra-base hits, six runs scored and seven RBIs in four games last week. He was 8-for-12 (.666) in a three-game series against York with three doubles, a home run, five runs scored and three RBIs. He also posted a save on the mound in FSU’s 10-7 win over La Roche last Tuesday.
Shupe is currently fifth in the conference in batting average (.384) and fourth in RBIs (27).
Youth basketball league forming
CUMBERLAND — A spring/summer basketball league is forming in the Cumberland area. The league is open to boys and girls ages 9-14. Signups will be held Saturday, April 20, and Saturday, April 27, from noon to 2 p.m., at the Mason Riverside Complex in South Cumberland.
