CUMBERLAND — She had only one hit, but Alexis Kimmell provided the biggest of the day by hitting a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift Fort Hill to a 9-8 win over Southern Monday at Flynn Field in Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Kimmell, who also earned the win after taking the mound during the second inning, came to plate with one out and one on in the bottom of the seventh. Cheyenne Rice singled to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Taylor Hoppert. Kimmel then drove her ball over the heads of the outfielders for the game-winner and reached third base before any fielder got to the ball.
Kimmell finished with three strikeouts and allowed two runs in the fifth inning after entering with her team down 6-0.
The Rams got things started with two runs in the top of the first, then tacked on four more runs in the second inning.
Fort Hill got its first runs in the bottom of the second, and closed to within a run by scoring three more in the third. Both teams traded a pair of runs in fifth inning and the Sentinels scored their final two in their last at bats.
Emma Bauer, Morgan Cranford and Hoppert all finished with two singles and Michala Garrison finished with a triple and a double.
The Rams (2-1, 2-1 AMAC) got four hits from Brooke Spiker, two doubles and two singles, and a triple with two singles from Faith Tichnell. Michaela Bosley hit a double.
Both teams play today at 4 p.m. Fort Hill (4-1, 3-0) is at Frankfort and Southern visits Mountain Ridge today.
