CUMBERLAND — Garrett College scored two runs in the seventh inning to break a 7-7 tie and then put the game away with five in the eighth to come-from-behind to defeat Allegany College of Maryland 14-7 Wednesday afternoon.
The Lakers, led by Corey Helbig and Jason Hepple’s combined seven hits, outslugged the Trojans 18-15 and committed two errors to ACM’s five.
Helbig, a former Southern Garrett standout, led the Lakers with four hits and two RBI. Hepple had three while Carlos King, Mike Drake and Lewis Rios all had two hits. Rios drove in two.
Reynaldo Adames tripled and drove in a run as part of his two hits. Brandon Miller had three hits including a double. Jeff Morgan, Drew O’Neal and Cody Malone each had two hits with Morgan driving in a run.
Allegany (12-14) took a 1-0 lead after the first inning, led 5-3 and 6-4 after the next two innings before Garrett took a 7-6 lead with a three-run fourth. Allegany tied it with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Garrett’s Joe Mascolo relieved starter Bryor Weiss in the fourth to get the win and Tyler Lawrence came on in the eighth for the save. Mascolo struck out four, allowing six hits and one run. Lawrence had three strikeouts without any walks.
Allegany (5-8 Maryland JUCO, 3-7 Division II) visits Dundalk on Saturday for a 12 p.m. doubleheader. Its Thursday doubleheader with Southern Maryland has been moved up a day to Wednesday with a 1 p.m. start.
Garrett (16-18, 5-8 Maryland JUCO) will host Cecil for two on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Frostburg State 10
La Roche 7
PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Frostburg State saw a three-run lead slip away in the bottom of the ninth but it battled back to defeat La Roche in 11 innings on Tuesday.
Frostburg (18-11) led 7-4 going into the ninth inning and seemed to be in control for the Bobcats, winners of four of their last six games.
La Roche (17-5) scored three runs on three RBI — all with two outs — to tie the game at 7-7.
FSU scored three runs in the top of the 11th. Junior Dylan Shupe doubled home Rob Jennings for the first run and Shupe scored on Brandon Remalia’s triple. Freshman Ryan McGuigan scored the final run with a sacrifice fly.
Shupe pitched in the bottom of the inning for his third save.
J.K. Filauro was the only Bobcat with multiple hits, going 2 for 5 with two runs and a stolen base. Shupe finished 1 for 3 with three RBI, two runs scored, and a double.
Zach Lawhorn earned the win after tossing the 10th inning and striking out two.
Sean Lubin led La Roche with five hits, three runs, two RBI and a stolen base.
FSU hosts Penn State Fayette today at 4 p.m.
