Mountain Ridge to host

open middle school track meets


FROSTBURG — From Friday, April 12 through Friday, May 3 middle school track and field open meets will be held at Mountain Ridge High School beginning at 6 p.m. The events will be the 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600-meter runs, as well as the running long jump.

Students will be able to sign up at the starting line of each event as no pre-registration will be required.

West Side Hunters registration today

CUMBERLAND — The West Side Hunters pee wee football/ cheerleading team will hold registration today, 6 to 8 p.m., at Downtown Chick-Fil-A. Players and cheerleaders must be six years of age on or before Sept. 1, but not have reached his or her 12th birthday prior to Sept. 1.

PSC alumni soccer game Saturday

KEYSER, W.Va. — The Potomac State College men’s soccer team will hold an alumni game Saturday, 2 p.m., at Stayman Field. Any former PSC players interested in playing should report to the field at 1:30 p.m. For information, contact Ray Kiddy at 301-268-1606.

Youth basketball tournament set

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The seventh annual East Fairmont Shootout, a basketball tournament for boys and girls in grades 5-12, will be held May 10-12 at East Fairmont High, East Fairmont Junior High and Fairmont State University. Maryland’s Pe’Shon Howard transferring

COLLEGE PARK (AP) — Maryland point guard Pe’Shon Howard has been granted permission by the school to transfer for his senior season.

Howard says he wants to be closer to his ailing grandmother, who lives in California.

The 6-foot-3 Howard averaged 3.3 points and 3.6 assists in 36 games this season. He started in 24 games. Over his three-year career at Maryland, Howard averaged 4.7 points and 3.5 assists in 83 games.

Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said, “We understand this is best for Pe’Shon and his family and will support him through this transition.”

Howard called it a “difficult decision.” He expressed his gratitude to Turgeon for “allowing me to pursue an opportunity to complete my final season of college basketball at a university closer to home.”
