St. Mary’s shuts out Bobcats, 4-0
FROSTBURG — Frostburg State surrendered two goals in each half and suffered a 4-0 Capital Athletic Conference setback to St. Mary's on senior day Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats slip to 6-11 overall and 1-4 in the loss, while St. Mary’s improves to 8-4 overall and 1-2.
Olivia Edwards scored three of the four Seahawk goals, including two in the first half. Edwards’ first goal came at 16:12 and she followed it up with her second at 17:53.
In the second half, Ally Dahlen scored at 42:53 and Edwards completed the game with her third score at 69:26.
Frostburg’s Becky Randel and Jackie Best led with two shots apiece, including one on goal.
St. Mary’s outshot FSU 13-7. Megan Grimm made four saves whiel Christy Bishop stopped four for St. Mary’s.
Frostburg hosts Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
FSU splits in its home tri-match
FROSTBURG — Frostburg State took home a victory against Capital Athletic Conference opponent Wesley, 3-2, before falling to John Carroll, 3-1, in Frostburg’s own tri-match on Saturday.
The battle between Wesley and Frostburg State went down to the wire with Frostburg State taking the final set by two points to grab the 3-2 win.
Frostburg (5-23) grabbed the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-19.
The Wolverines bounced back and clenched back-to-back sets to tie up the match. Wesley finished with the 25-14 edge in the third set and won the fourth 25-20.
It all came down to the fifth set that saw a tie on nine separate occasions. It was all even at 11-11 when the Wolverines suffered three errors to put Frostburg up 14-11.
The Bobcats’ Kayla Porter served up an ace for a 14-13 lead. The match was finished when Wesley committed a service error for a 15-13 finish.
Aimee Petrides paced the Bobcats with a team-high 14 kills and 15 digs and a block. Porter and Caitlyn Collins each tallied 11 digs while Collins handed out 29 assists, two blocks and a kill.
Later in the evening, Frostburg State matched up with John Carroll who swept Wesley 3-0 in the second match.
The Bobcats grabbed a close 25-22 victory in the first set before John Carroll (16-8) bounced back to grab the next three sets behind scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-10.
Petrides led with a game-high 15 kills and 12 digs. April Wolfe contributed 15 digs defensively and on the offensive side posted five kills and an ace. Collins handed out 22 assists, nine digs, three aces and two kills. Junior Morgan Hoover added 10 digs and six kills while Porter added 11 digs.
FSU travels to York (Pa.) on Wednesday for a CAC match at 7 p.m.
