Youth basketball league begins

CUMBERLAND — A new youth basketball league is forming for any boy and girl in grades 3-5. The league will play its games at Washington Middle School. Further information will be released as the league develops. For information, contact Jimmy Washington at 301-784-6550.

W&J wins defensive battle with FSU, 1-0

FROSTBURG — Frostburg State surrendered just one goal, but it was all that Washington & Jefferson needed to capture a 1-0 victory in college women’s field hockey on Wednesday.

Catherine Beaudoin scored unassisted in the 21st minute for the Presidents (11-5). Beaudoin fired a shot into the net off the right post that lifted Washington & Jefferson to its third straight win.

Washington & Jefferson held a 16-8 edge in shots.

FSU goalkeeper Megan Grimm made eight saves and Alisha Salomon contributed a defensive save.

Frostburg State (6-12) plays at No. 12 Mary Washington (Va.) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
