Offsteins reach 2A state meet

Miners girls finish 5th, boys 13th

ELDERSBURG — Sophomore Molly Offstein placed third and her older sister Madison finished 11th Thursday to lead Mountain Ridge to a fifth-placed finish in the Maryland 2A West Region championship at Liberty High School.

The Offstein sisters were the only individual runners from the region to qualify for the 2A state meet, scheduled for Nov. 9 at McDaniel College, as no other girl and none of the members of the boys team were able to crack into the top 20 required to advance.

Molly Offstein finished at 19:36, 31 seconds back of region champion Meggan Grams (Boonsboro) and Madison crossed about a minute later at 20:41.

Poolesville grabbed the girls team title with 70 points and Oakdale was second at 85. Century was third (97), followed by Boonsboro (100), Liberty (128) and Mountain Ridge with 177. South Carroll followed the Miners with 181, Winters Mill had 226 to tie with Walkersville a­nd Middletown scored 306 points. Williamsport posted 358 points and Francis Scott Key was last with 370.

The Miners’ boys team was 13th. Catoctin took the top spot with 62 points, Poolesville was second at 89, Liberty third with 101 and Century was fourth at 113. Oakdale had 115 points in fifth, Boonsboro had 149 in sixth and was followed by Winters Mill (159), South Carroll (188), Walkersville (215), Middletown (234) and Williamsport (268). Francis Scott Keyser at 391 and the Miners at 394 round out the 13 boys teams.

The top seven teams in each region qualify for the state meet.
