Fort Hill sweeps Southern

Sentinels host Smithburg Friday in West Region final

— CUMBERLAND — Undefeated

Fort Hill will play for

the Maryland 1A West Region

volleyball championship for

the sixth

year in a

row, and

will play



the fifth

time in a

row, the



defeated Southern Garrett,

25-5, 25-11 and 25-11 in the

Section I championship

match Wednesday night at

Fort Hill.

Sarah Lowery led Fort Hill

on Wednesday with 10 kills

and 19 points, while Haley

Wolfe had 28 assists and six

points. Erin Amoruso scored

13 points with six aces and

Skylar Barbe had 13 points,

six aces and two kills. Bailey

Godlove had six kills and

Danielle Hershiser five kills.

Lauren Francillon had four

kills, eight points and four

aces for Southern, and Becca

Lee had 14 assists, one kill

and one dig.

Fort Hill (16-0) will host

Smithsburg Friday at 6 p.m.,

for the West Region championship

and a berth to the

state tournament. The Leopards

have won the last four

1A state championships, last

night sealing the Section II

title with a 3-0 sweep of Clear

Spring. Smithsburg has won

61 straight sets in state playoff

play as well as 22 straight

victories. The last time

Smithsburg lost in the playoffs

was at Fort Hill in the

2008 Region semifinals

before the Sentinels fell to

eventual state champion

Poolesville in the Region

Frankfort defeated Berkeley

Springs and Petersburg in

the Class AA Sectional playoffs

on Tuesday night at

Frankfort High School to

advance to the regional finals

at Robert C. Byrd High

School in Clarksburg on Saturday.

The Falcons swept both

matches 3-0.

Frankfort defeated Berkeley

Springs 25-9, 25-10 and 25-

12 and later beat Petersburg

25-13, 25-8 and 25-10.

Sarah Dayton led the Falcons

(20-18) with 36 points, 8

aces, 22 digs and 26 assists.

Cassidy Cosner had 17

points, 4 aces, 17 kills,

Autumn Dishman scored 16

points, with 4 aces and 40

digs and Taylor Sisk had 10

points, 17 kills and 4 blocks.

Kayla Rowe, Jessie Dayton

and Sarah Whiteman combined

for 24 kills while Caroline

Timbrook had 11 points

and 22 digs, Sarah Appel 10

points and 10 assists, and

Courtney Helmstetter had 11


Cheyenne Earle had 5

assists and 3 kills for Petersburg

and Lacee Sites had 3

kills and 2 blocks.

The Vikings beat Keyser in

their match, 3-2, winning the

tie-breaker set 15-13, before

facing the Falcons. Earle had

25 assists, 16 service points

with 5 aces and 5 kills, Marley

Thompson had 20 service

points with 4 aces and 3 kills,

Callie Wisnewski had 13 service

points with 5 aces, Sites

18 kills and 3 blocks and

Megan Cook 9 kills.
