Legeer’s RBI lifts Southern to victory

HANCOCK — Sydney Legeer singled home Michaela Bosley in the bottom of the seventh to snap a tie game and lift fourth-seeded Southern to a 4-3 win over fifth-seeded Hancock in the opening round of the Class 1A West Section playoffs on Friday.

Legeer’s walk-off single in a game moved to Hancock because of inclement weather and poor field conditions in Oakland sends the Rams (9-9) to the sectional semifinals. They will play at top-seeded and defending state champion Mountain Ridge on Monday at 5 p.m.

Legeer, who finished with a pair of singles, reached base on all four of her plate appearances. Brianna Glass got the win with a four-hitter and five strikeouts.

Legeer and Kelsey Beckman singled in the first inning and Faith Tichnell doubled to give Southern an early 1-0 lead. Brooke Spiker singled and scored in the second and Bosley reached base and scored in the fifth to extend the Southern lead to 3-0.

Hancock (9-9) rallied with a run in the sixth and tied it 3-3 in the top of the seventh on singles by Courtney Royce and Jessica Martin.
