Southern’s Shaffer signs with Bridgewater

Offensive Player of Year led area, AMAC in scoring

OAKLAND — Alli Shaffer, one of the most prolific offensive players in Southern High School soccer history, has committed to continue her soccer career at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va.

Shaffer, the Cumberland Times-News Offensive Player of the Year in 2012 and a two-time All-Area first-teamer, finished her high school career with 58 goals and 17 assists in 54 games, a career scoring average of 2.46.

As a senior, Shaffer won the area scoring championship with 19 goals and five assists for 43 points in 15 games and a 2.87 average. She was also the Appalachian Mountain Athletic League scoring champ, getting 10 goals and five assists in eight games for a 3.13 mark.

Bridgewater Coach Mike Van Horn feels Shaffer will make a big impact for his Eagles.

“Alli’s ability as an attacking player combined with her size and speed will frustrate opponents and provide our offense the opportunity to get behind the defense. We are excited to have a player of Alli’s caliber joining us in 2013,” he said.

Bridgewater competes in NCAA Division III in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), one of the top Division III conferences in the country. The Eagles were 12-7-2 overall last year and fourth in the conference at 8-3-1.

Southern was 9-6 and No. 3 in the final area poll last year. The Rams finished second in the AMAC with a 6-2 record.
