Southern rally sinks Hampshire

— ROMNEY, W.Va. — Third-ranked Southern spotted No. 4 Hampshire a two-goal lead then came-from-behind to defeat the Trojans 3-2 at Hampshire Tuesday evening.

Alli Shaffer scored unassisted with a minute remaining to give Southern the victory.

Hampshire took a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Brooke Harwood and Emilynn Corbin with both coming in the sixth minute of the game. Brittany Maphis assisted on Harwood’s goal before Harwood assisted Corbin’s goal.

Southern closed to within a goal when Julianna Sharpless scored on the first of Shaffer’s two assists at the 19:00 mark.

In the second half, the Rams tied it on Alicia Harpole’s goal off of Shaffer’s assist with 20 minutes to play in the game.

Southern led in shots, 13-11 while the teams tied on corner kicks, 5-5.

The Rams improve to 6-4 while Hampshire drops to 10-5-3. The Trojans visit Fort Hill Thursday for a 6 p.m. game. Southern hosts Allegany Tuesday.

KEYSER, W.Va. — Northern’s defense smothered Keyser and Kirsten Raynor recorded a hat trick in a win at Keyser on Tuesday.

Raynor scored unassisted 3:04 into the game. Amanda Paape followed on a pass from Callie Vernon to make it 2-0. Raynor’s second goal came on an assist from Erica Kipp at 17:20. Madi Gallagher was then assisted by Vernon to make it 4-0 at halftime.

Raynor’s third goal was unassisted with 31:08 left in the second half. Vernon made it 6-0 at 25:17. Finally, Gallagher scored again at 21:14.

Northern put an overwhelming 30 shots on goal to Keyser’s zero. Vanessa Wheeler saved 10 of them for the Golden Tornado.

Northern is 6-4-1 and hosts Mountain Ridge on Thursday at 7 p.m. Keyser finishes the regular season 1-17-1.

CUMBERLAND — Niven Hegeman scored two first-half goals to lead top-ranked Mountain Ridge to a victory over Allegany Monday at Greenway Avenue Stadium to keep the Miners undefeated in Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Hegeman scored her goals at 25:09 and 22:16 of the first half to spot the Miners a 2-0 halftime lead. Annabelle Hegeman then made it 3-0 with a goal at 38:15 of the second, before Lexie Metz concluded the scoring at 37:54.

Mountain Ridge keeper Chelsea Muir had one save, while Allegany’s Tori Boher had six saves against two goals allowed and Rachel Wormack seven saves to two goals.

Mountain Ridge (9-1-1 overall, 8-0-1 AMAC) will play Thursday at Northern. Allegany (4-6, 2-5) will visit Frankfort today.
