Mets call up reliever, designate Laffey for assignment

ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK — Seeking help for their struggling bullpen, the New York Mets have recalled Rob Carson from Triple-A Las Vegas and designated fellow left-hander Aaron Laffey for assignment.

The moves were made before Sunday’s series finale against the Washington Nationals.

Laffey had a 7.20 ERA in four outings for the Mets, including two starts. He came out of the bullpen Saturday and gave up a go-ahead, three-run homer to left-handed hitter Adam LaRoche.

Laffey was brought up from Las Vegas to fill in for injured starter Shaun Marcum, who is on the disabled list with right biceps tendinitis. Marcum is slated to throw about 70 pitches in extended spring training Monday and if all goes well he’ll be penciled in to start Saturday for the Mets against Philadelphia, with a limit of 90-95 pitches.

The 24-year-old Carson allowed one earned run and two hits in eight appearances at Las Vegas. He struck out seven and walked two in 7 2-3 innings.

New York has 10 days to trade, release or send Laffey outright to the minors.
